Ursula E. Smoot passed away peacefully on August 22, 2018 after suffering a stroke. She was the wife of Perry R. Smoot. Ursula was born in Bad Liebenwerde, Germany, the daughter of Paul and Elsbeth Wende, and raised and educated in Germany and Austria. She was 96 years old.
While she lived in Vienna, Ursula met her husband, Perry, a lieutenant in the US Army, and they were married 1956. In 1957, she joined her husband in the United States. They lived in Wayland, Massachusetts from 1965 until 2013 when they moved to Concord, Massachusetts. Perry and Ursula were happily married for 62 years.
Besides Perry her husband, Ursula leaves three children: Franklin Wende Smoot of Sunnyvale, California, Stephanie Elsbeth Smoot of Lincoln, Massachusetts, and Peter Logan Smoot of San Jose, California. She leaves three grandchildren, Jeanelle, Nicole, and Veronica.
Ursula was a longtime volunteer in the Emerson Auxiliary at Emerson Hospital in Concord; a member of the Austrian-American Association of Boston, a member of Peace Lutheran Church since 1965, and a member of the Square Riggers Square Dance Club. Every year, for almost forty years, on April 19 at 4:30 AM, Ursula hosted a breakfast in her home for the Sudbury Company of Minutemen before their reenactment march to Concord.
Always stylish, charming, youthful in appearance, and interested in life, Ursula was a dedicated mother, enjoyed attending cultural events, spending time with her many friends, making Christmas cookies, sewing, and gardening. In their retirement, she and Perry travelled in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In 2004, then 82 years old, she accompanied Stephanie to Vladivostok, Russia to bring home her granddaughter, Veronica Ursula.
A memorial service for Ursula Smoot will be held at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 29 at 2:30 pm. Peace Lutheran is located at 107 Concord Road in Wayland (508) 358-7110. A reception will be held afterwards.
