Summary: The program takes an estimated international audience of 750 million to the city's Musikverein concert hall and historic Spanish Riding School, home of the renowned Lipizzaner stallions, for a lilting 90 minutes of Strauss waltzes, polkas and marches. Maestro Seiji Ozawa lifts his baton to lead the famed Vienna Philharmonic. Among the favorites to be heard are the Die Fledermaus Overture, Tik-Tak Polka, Wiener Blut Waltz, and, as a salute to the new Euro currency, Perpetual Motion, accompanied by a film montage, Dance of the Machines, featuring the money's printing and minting at the Austrian National Bank and the Austrian Mint. The Blue Danube Waltz will be choreographed and danced live by Vladimir Malakov and the Vienna State Opera Ballet in the historic Parliament building. Other highlights in From Vienna: The New Year Celebration 2002 include a visit to the Kunsthistorische Museum on Maria Theresien Platz, where viewers will be treated to paintings by Brueghel, Rembrandt, and others - to the strains of Joseph Strauss' Aquarellen Waltz - plus a side trip to the stunning new MuseumsQuartier. And it is in Vienna that the most technically state-of-the-art interactive House of Music opened recently, where visitors can "conduct" the Vienna Philharmonic. Host Cronkite takes his chances with the group, and viewers will see - and hear - the result.
